Information About Natural Gas
- Natural gas is neither toxic nor poisonous. However, if natural
gas displaces the air in an enclosed space, suffocation can occur
because of the lack of oxygen.
- Natural gas is lighter than air and it will rise and diffuse
rapidly when it escapes in an open area. It should not be confused
with liquefied petroleum gas (L.P., bottle gas, propane, butane)
which is heavier than air and collects in low places when not
confined.
- Natural gas is odorless, colorless, and tasteless in its
natural state; therefore, an odorant is added to give it a
distinctive odor.
- The ignition point of natural gas is 1100- 1200 degrees F. This
temperature is reached by pilot lights, flint sparks, matches, or
sparks from electrical switches or motors.
- Contains approximately 1,000 BTU's per cubic foot.
- Natural consist mainly of methane and ethane.
If You Suspect a Gas Leak:
- Ventilate the area by opening windows and doors
- Do not operate light switches, door bells, phones or electrical
appliances
- Report the leak to the Authority
- If there is a strong smell of natural gas, evacuate the
building immediately
